One Astonishing Offer

Jesus Christ makes one astonishing offer to us. In all of His power, glory and yes, in the fact that He died for our sins, He says to all humanity, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me (Revelation 3:20).”

Jesus in all of who He is, stands at the door and knocks for  you and for me.

This is one astonishing offer especially when you review the seven glories (my last blog post) found in  Hebrews 1:1–3. Just look at this list:

Jesus is God’s final word

Jesus is the appointed heir

Jesus is the divine creator

Jesus is unique divine expression

Jesus is the omnipotent sustainer of all life

Jesus is our sacrificial redeemer

Jesus is the ruling authority

The only way we can look at this list is with jaw-dropping awe and wonder at the Lord Jesus Christ. He’s everything. He is Lord of Lords.

Jesus holds the universe in His hands, and it is with that same hand that He knocks on the door of your and my heart and asks, “Will you let me in?”

A magazine article written in 1871 by Reverend Doctor Macleod Birkenhead put it this way, “The Lord Jesus stands and knocks. [At] a very precious door, the door that opens into the house within the heart.”[1]

Jesus knocks at the door of your heart because He wants to do everything that He came to do and He wants to do it for you.

You see, it’s not about just Merry Christmas. It’s about Jesus Christ, in human flesh, who was born to a life with all the struggles that we have so He could understand our weaknesses and so He could pay the price on the cross for us. We can have a brand new life because Jesus came and because He sacrificed His life for our sin.

If you don’t know Him, He’s knocking. If you want to know Him better, He’s knocking.

I’ll close with what Charles H. Spurgeon said in a sermon:

“The Lord Himself invites you to a conference concerning your immediate and endless happiness, and He would not have done this if He did not mean well toward you. Do not refuse the Lord Jesus who knocks at your door; for He knocks with a hand which was nailed to the tree for such as you are.”[2]

Jesus Christ makes one astonishing offer—today you can have Him reside in your heart. Today, you can know that you’ll be in Heaven for eternity. Today, you can have the creator of the Universe at your side and in your heart, forever.

Will you answer the door?
