Living an Overcoming Life
We can live an overcoming life through the person, presence, power and promises of Jesus. When there is something to overcome in our lives, we need to make sure we are standing (or abiding) totally and absolutely in Him. That is how we will become an overcomer—whether things go the way we hoped or planned, or not. Abiding in Jesus and holing onto Him with relentless faith is how we live the overcoming life.
What does living this way help us to overcome?
- The World. 1 John 5:4–5 makes it clear that were able to overcome the world. What is the world? John points us in the right direction in 1 John 2:16–17.The world is the lust of the flesh (every internal perversion that promises immediate satisfaction and tantalizes our flesh, but in the end only brings heartache and ruin.). The lust of the eyes (every external lustful thing that promises fulfillment but brings ruin), and the pride of life (everything that masquerades as important. It’s an identity apart from Jesus).
- The Wicked One. 1 John 2:14 and Revelation 12:11 clearly show us how we can overcome the enemy. We overcome the wicked one by knowing God’s Word and letting it abide in us. We also overcome the wicked one through the blood of Jesus and not loving this earthly life, but keeping our eyes focused on heavenly, eternal things of Jesus.
- Our Wounds. Read what the Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 8:33–37. He is telling us that we are more than conquerors; more than overcomers, even in our most serious wounding. In our darkest circumstances and troubling times, we are overcomers through Jesus who loves us unconditionally.
Revelation 21:7 clearly summarizes all of this. John writes, “He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son.”
There is a promised inheritance and relationship with God for the overcomer that exceeds our wildest imaginations. This same promised inheritance and relationship makes everything we have to overcome, more than worth it. We need to have faith and believe His promises. We must never quit because when we persevere, with Jesus, we will be an overcomer!
