Anointing that Protects
The anointing that the Apostle John refers to in 1 John 2:20–21 is the presence, the power and the work of the Holy Spirit of the Living God. Here’s what we have to remember—when we’re faced with the delusion and deception of the Antichrists and apostasy, it is this anointing that protects us. It is this anointing that covers us with God’s Truth and shields us from deception.
John writes just a few verses later (1 John2: 26-27), These things I have written to you concerning those who try to deceive you. But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.
The anointing is the Holy Spirit’s presence, power and work. What does the Holy Spirit do? He teaches us and He helps us to know everything we need to know.
Let me give you an example. When I was a young Christian I had tremendous hunger for God and God’s Spirit was working in me. I certainly didn’t have all the answers and all of the doctrines down, however, when I would hear things that were funky, I could feel this anointing John wrote about going bing, bing, bing, bing, red flag, danger, danger; no, don’t go there, that ain’t right.
That is the anointing. That is just one example of the Holy Spirit’s abiding presence in us and how, even though there are things that we might not have all of the answers for, He’s abiding in us. Then, when some whacky false teaching or deception comes our way, He starts going no, no, no, no, no. It’s our responsibility to listen and pay attention. It’s what the Holy Spirit does. He warns us. He teaches us, and He says, “Don’t go there; that’s not truth.”
I can’t help but think that John was thinking back to what Jesus said about the Holy Spirit. He recorded Jesus’ words in John 14:16-17, 26. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever—the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you in all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
Jesus continues in John 16:13, However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
Jesus is talking about the Holy Spirit’s presence and work. He is going to guide us into all of God’s Truth.
My friends, you have to understand the active role of the Holy Spirit in your life. You have to know that the third person of the Trinity is every bit as much of God as the Father and the Son—that He is anointing us, that He is guiding us, that He is leading us, and that He is speaking Truth to us. He is warning us. He is convicting us. He is present to do a special work and we must always listen and obey His voice.
We are witnessing an incredible battle for our hearts today. To fight it, we’ve must be consumed with the Truth that the Holy Spirit shares. It is powerful and it protects us from apostasy and antichrists.
