God is Looking for True Worshipers
In the gospel of John, chapter four, there is a famous story of Jesus’ encounter with a Samaritan woman at a well. They’re having this back-and-forth conversation about her life. She is a Samaritan so she’d always been taught that God should be worshiped in at particular place, and in a particular way. Jesus tells her, “You don’t know what you’re talking about because worship is of the Jews.” Then He goes on and straightens her out. Here’s what Jesus says to her: “But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
He makes the point to her (and us) simply and directly—God is looking for people who will worship Him in spirit and truth.
You may ask, “What’s He talking about?”
God is looking for people who are worshiping Him from a place deep inside of them that He has made alive through Jesus—that is going to live forever. He is looking for people to worship Him from that place in truth, in sincerity, and in genuineness. He’s looking for something that’s real, that means something, and that costs them something.
The Samaritan woman was caught up in physical structure, geographic location and mechanical motion. She was taught that worship was going to a certain place and doing certain things. She was taught that worship was a set of certain motions. Jesus said, “It’s not about those things.”
Worshiping in spirit and truth isn’t a prescribed set of sameness. It’s not about saying things that aren’t really true and then going through some motions hoping that God will love you. It’s not about that.
Spirit and truth worship is about your heart. It’s a true expression of what God has done in your life.
The early church had an encounter with God. As a result, they worshiped God in spirit and truth. Their worship was rooted in spiritual truth.
God is looking for people willing to worship Him in spirit and truth. He’s looking for people who are true worshipers. I pray that when He looks upon your and my life that He sees people who worship Him in spirit and truth and not just tradition, mechanics, or going through the motions.
