Jesus: The Centerpiece of God’s Action
In Luke 4, Jesus returns to Galilee and travels throughout the region. His fame increases as reports of his radical teaching spread. He returns home and, as tradition taught Him, goes to his hometown synagogue.
Entering the synagogue, Jesus reads from the Isaiah scroll that is handed to him.
As Jesus reads from the scroll, He chooses a verse from the Old Testament (Isaiah 61:1,2 and a bit from 58:6) that shows that He’s putting His hand in the harvest to change lives (God’s action) and He he shows us that He wasn’t doing it alone.
Luke 4:18–19 reads, “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed; to proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD”
Jesus Christ says that the Spirit of The Lord is upon Him—Because.
That word just leaps out at us. Why was the Spirit of the Lord upon Him? Because there was Gospel work to do and a Gospel message to share.
He’s telling us that the presence and power of the Holy Spirit is absolutely necessary if He’s going into the harvest and guess what? That’s true for us as well. We cannot do God’s work, His action, without the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. When we try to go it alone, we’ll fail.
God doesn’t give us the Spirit just so we can have our own little spiritual charge. He doesn’t give us the Spirit so we can keep it to ourselves. He gave Jesus the Spirit and He gives us the Spirit—because. We have work to do and we cannot do it alone.
Jesus said, “The Spirit is upon Me because…” He knew that He was called to do His father’s work. He was the centerpiece of God’s action because He was filled with the Spirit. And, He knew that He could not do it alone.
The Holy Spirit needs to fill us and come upon us with power and give us boldness for His purpose. Do you believe that? Or, are your timid and fearful because you are not filled with His power?
Our hand needs to be in the harvest. We can be the centerpiece of God’s action, but only if we’re led and filled by the Spirit. Are you ready?
