Knowing We are Free

Over the last few weeks I’ve been teaching about This Magnificent Freedom. It’s about the incredible freedom we have as Christians and followers of Jesus.

I get a lot of questions from people and the big one is, “Okay Steve, I get it. God wants us free. but how do we get free?

Here is the answer. Write this down so you won’t forget it. We get free by knowing the truth. That’s it! We have to know the truth!

When we read what Jesus said in John 8:32-36, we need to keep in mind He is talking to religious people. He is talking to denominational people. He is talking to a nation of people. He is talking to the Pharisees.

Jesus said, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendents, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can you say, ‘You will be made free?’ Jesus answered them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. And a slave does not abide in the house forever, but a son abides forever. Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.”

That has to be more than a bumper sticker and a refrigerator magnet. It has to become transformational truth in our hearts. We’ve got to know the truth and then the truth will make us free.

Here’s something radically important for us to understand. The truth we know will set us free. Truth is just this thing that sort of just sits here. It’s accessed by knowing it and then the by-product of knowing it makes us free. If the truth is just hanging out there, it can’t help us until we know it. It’s the truth we know that will make us free.

So here’s the deal — we need to know the truth first. We need to experience it, and receive it. Knowing isn’t just knowledge. It’s far deeper than that. Knowledge is just facts or data; knowing is experiencing and living out of what we know.

The truth we know will set us free. Do you know His Truth? Do you experience His Truth? Are you free, in Christ?
