Inheriting the Earth
Those who are humble can be trusted with this huge inheritance of the earth (Matthew 5:5). God gives this to them because they have submitted to His will. They’ve lived a lifestyle of humility while they were on earth, practicing for eternity, where God will say, “You’re just the kind of people I can entrust with My stuff. Here, humble ones, the earth is yours.”
The Book of Revelation also speaks of this great inheritance. In chapter 5 we see the saved say to the Lamb of God: “You . . . have made us kings and priests to our God; and we shall reign on the earth” (vv. 9, 10). The people who are humble will reign on the earth because it’s theirs. It’s been given to them by God. Revelation 22:5 says, “There shall be no night there: They need no lamp nor light of the sun, for the Lord God gives them light. And they shall reign forever and ever.” Humility is rewarded with eternal, earthly reign, and pride is rewarded with eternal, hellish pain.
If you are struggling with being humble, remember this verse: “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted” (Luke 14:11). Jesus says that people will be humbled—you can either fall on the rock or let the rock fall on you. It doesn’t matter who you are, whether you’re a world leader or an unknown cookie delivery driver, if any of us walk in pride, we’ll be humbled. It doesn’t matter if you’re a leader or a follower, or a preacher. Think how many we have seen fall, and what has been the root issue? Pride and lack of humility.
King Nebuchadnezzar, after seven years out in the fields, with his fingernails as eagle talons and his hair as eagle feathers, said he came to understand this: “Those who walk in pride He [God] is able to put down (Daniel 4:37).” Wow. Humility is a beautiful thing. Pride and arrogance are ugly things.
How do you overcome pride? Why are pride and arrogance such an easy trap for leaders? Followers?
